Egypt at the time of the pharaohs. Aida is the daughter of an Ethiopian king who has been taken hostage to Egypt. The Egyptian army commander Radamès must decide between his love for her and his loyalty to the pharaoh and his marriage to his daughter Amneris. The grandeur of the theme is conveyed by powerful choruses, above all the famous triumphal march, alternating with enchanting arias.
