After the drama in Salome and Elektra, Strauss longed for a more cheerful material, and so he pays homage to his greatest role model: Mozart, with a musical comedy in the style of "opera buffa". Already the plot of the comedy of mistaken identity about a nobleman chasing a maid is reminiscent of Le nozze di Figaro.
The Marschallin, Princess of Werdenberg, has spent the night with her young lover Octavian. When her cousin Baron Ochs von Lerchenau appears, Octavian disguises himself as the chambermaid "Mariandel", who now has to endure the baron's importunities. The latter boasts of his impending marriage to Sophie von Faninal, the young daughter of a wealthy bourgeois. When he asks who could give Sophie the silver engagement rose, the Marschallin suggests Octavian. After the room empties, she falls into wistful reminiscence of her own youth.
During the presentation of the roses, Sophie and Octavian fall in love at first sight. As they exchange tender kisses, they are watched and betrayed. Octavian defends his love with his sword, injuring his rival Baron Ochs in the arm. Herr von Faninal, bursting with pride over his noble son-in-law, wants nothing to do with a relationship between his daughter and Octavian. Finally, the Baron falls into a trap and Herr von Faninal's eyes are opened. For the Mars...
