Figaro shows Mozart's art at the height of his abilities. The music is not simply beautiful, it also contains psychological depth and subtle humor. Mozart created authentic people with all their contradictions, drives, longings, fears and hopes. Richard Eyre sets this lively production in a Sevillian mansion of the golden 1920s.
Figaro, Count Almaviva's valet, is planning his wedding to Susanna. However, the Count also has his eye on Susanna and demands the "right of the first night", which is met with little enthusiasm by Figaro. Meanwhile, the countess tries to win back the affections of her unfaithful husband. Together with Susanne, she tries to lure the Count into a trap: Susanne promises him a rendez-vous, at which the Countess will appear disguised as Susanna. Further complications arise as Cherubino, a young page, is in love with the Countess and has to be hidden by Susanna and Figaro in order to escape the Count's wrath.
