Luigi Cherubini's Medea is perhaps the best-known musical adaptation of Euripides' tragedy based around the Greek myth of the Argonaut saga.
The king's daughter Medea is rejected by Jason, for whom she had left her own family, and takes cruel revenge. A work of profound seriousness and monumental melodicism, staged by David McVicar in a classical, timeless and tremendously atmospheric manner. For Brahms, this jewel of Baroque music was "what we musicians among ourselves recognize as the highest in dramatic music.
With Sondra Radvanovsky, Janai Brugger, Ekaterina Gubanova, Matthew Polenzani, Michele Pertusi
